High performance bi-mode traction for the UK – Class 99
Class 99 locomotives combine 25 kV AC electric and diesel operating modes underscoring Stadler’s commitments to support the UK’s journey towards a greener and more efficient rail transport.
The six-axle bi-mode Class 99 locomotives are similar to the EURODUAL but adapted to the British loading gauge and specifications. They boast an outstanding tractive effort of up to 500 kN, high hauling capability and performance and reach speeds of up to 120 km/h. They represent a new generation of locomotives that offer rail operators many economic and environmental benefits providing further momentum to facilitate modal shift from road to rail.
Highlights
Green drives technologies
The advanced Class 99 significantly reduces carbon emissions for rail freight transport combining 25 kV AC electric and diesel operating modes. Its low-emission Stage-V engine also optimizes combustion, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced greenhouse gases emissions.
Alternative fuels
The locomotives are also prepared for the use with HVO biofuels, which contribute to the reduction CO2eq emissions, supporting the decarbonisation of the transport sector.
Energy efficiency
Other innovative features of the Class 99 that lead to a reduction in energy consumption and emissions include regenerative braking for energy recovery and an efficient AC traction system with one inverter per axle.
Increased hauling performance
With up to 500 kN of tractive effort and up to 6 MW of power, the impressive high-performance locomotive enables, in many cases, the transport of heavier and longer trains with just one locomotive, resulting in a higher payload and lower traction costs.
Flexible in operation
The versatile Class 99 locomotive can operate seamlessly across gaps in electrified networks using a powerful cutting-edge engine.
Homogeneous fleet
The reduction of the fleet size is possible by having a single locomotive for all kind of operations. A homogeneous fleet means savings in driver training, spare parts, and maintenance.
Minimun downtime
High level of in-built redundancy, extended maintenance intervals and minimum routine consumables to reduce costs and downtime. In addition, in-service proven components and subsystems guarantee outstanding levels of reliability.
THE BEST BOGIE TECHNOLOGY
The high performance three-axle bogie, with high adhesion and very low track forces, even lower than in some modern two-axle bogies, enables lower wear and tear on the infrastructure and reduced track access costs.
THE BEST WORKING PLACE FOR THE DRIVERS
Safe and efficient operations start with the driver. Our drivers’ cabs are designed according to ergonomic criteria, as well as in compliance with the noise and comfort requirements as set out in the latest standards. They are fully insulated, acoustically and thermally, and feature an enhanced HVAC system that optimizes cab comfort.
DIGITALISATION
Our top-of-the-range locomotives are fitted with the latest generation of vehicle control systems, including remote monitoring and diagnosis features to enable our customers to move to a predictive maintenance environment.
