Stadler Rail Service UK Limited (SRS UK) is a subsidiary of Stadler Rail AG Switzerland, providing services to a growing number of customers in the United Kingdom. With its headquarters in Liverpool, SRS UK offers maintenance work and efficient all-round service on all rail vehicles. 400 people work at SRS UK locations around the country.
Since 2016, Stadler has won six contracts in the UK, several with integrated service solutions. It manufactured and delivered 58 FLIRT for Abellio East Anglia from 2019, which are now serviced and maintained at Crown Point depot in Norwich.
Stadler will build and provide 53 METRO trains for the Liverpool City Region; 17 METRO trains for the Glasgow Subway, on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport; 71 trains for Transport for Wales; and 46 METRO trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro in Newcastle, operated by Nexus. Last year, Stadler and Rail Operations (UK) Limited signed a framework agreement for the supply of 30 Class 93 tri-mode locomotives. In April 2022, together with Beacon Rail and GB Railfreight (GBRf), the company signed an agreement for the supply of 30 Class 99 bi-mode Co’Co’ locomotives, including spare parts.
The contracts in Norwich, Liverpool and Newcastle comprise full service agreements for the new fleets, including light and heavy maintenance of the units to ensure the highest possible availability of trains and the most efficient maintenance turnaround. Both the Liverpool and Newcastle contracts include the construction of new purpose-built depots. Kirkdale depot in Liverpool was completed in 2018 and Gosforth depot in Newcastle is currently being constructed.
Stadler has been responsible for maintaining and cleaning the Merseyrail legacy fleet at Birkenhead depot since 2017 and the Tyne and Wear Metro legacy fleet at Gosforth depot since 2020.
With several of the new fleets scheduled to be introduced into passenger service over the next couple of years, Stadler will soon be responsible for servicing just shy of 250 trains in the UK.
