ATO stands for Automatic Train Operation and is a collection of different applications for the partial and full automation of railway operations. To achieve maximum efficiency from existing infrastructure, Stadler's ATO solution can be implemented on existing train protection systems, control systems and rolling stock. Using the underlying train protection system, Stadler is able to significantly improve minimum train running times, energy consumption and passenger comfort. The various algorithms can be customised to meet customer requirements. In particular, the modularity of the ATO applications ensures that specific customer solutions are possible, utilising the existing infrastructure and rolling stock. Depending on the existing infrastructure and rolling stock, Stadler is able to present a customised concept and offer a complete solution that includes installation and retrofitting of the rolling stock.

This system uses real-time data, including localisation (e.g. via GPS navigation), vehicle, timetable and route information, and evaluates it using algorithms to recommend the most efficient and energy-saving driving style.
